How to Play Seven Card Stud

Seven Card Stud is the classic game of observation and precision. Learn the rules, hand rankings, and strategy to master this iconic poker variant where the highest hand wins.

What is Seven Card Stud?

Before Texas Hold'em took over the world, Seven Card Stud was the most widely played poker variant in the United States. It is a fixed-limit game played with 2 to 8 players. In Seven Card Stud, there are no community cards. Instead, you are dealt seven individual cards throughout the hand—three face down and four face up—to make your best possible five-card high hand.

1 No Flop, No Community Cards

Every card you are dealt is yours alone. You must build your hand independently.

2 Observation is Key

Since many cards are dealt face up, tracking "dead cards" (cards folded by opponents) is crucial for success.

3 Highest Hand Wins

Unlike Razz or Hi-Lo, Seven Card Stud is a pure high game. Standard poker hand rankings apply.

Seven Card Stud Hand Rankings

Seven Card Stud uses the standard traditional poker hand rankings. A Royal Flush is the absolute best possible hand, while a high card with no pair is the worst. From your seven dealt cards, you must select exactly five to form your final hand.

How to Play Seven Card Stud (Street-by-Street)

Seven Card Stud is played over five betting rounds. Most games are played with a Fixed-Limit betting structure. This involves "small bets" on the early streets and "big bets" on the later streets.

0

Antes & The Bring-In

Before the cards are dealt, all players must post a forced bet called the ante to seed the pot.

3

Third Street (The Initial Deal)

Each player is dealt three cards: two face down (hole cards) and one face up (door card). The player with the lowest door card must post the bring-in bet. If there's a tie, suits determine the lowest card in alphabetical order: ♣ Clubs (lowest), ♦ Diamonds, ♥ Hearts, ♠ Spades (highest).

4

Fourth Street

Each remaining player is dealt a fourth card face up. From this round onwards, the player with the highest hand showing acts first. Betting limits are at the smaller increment, unless a player shows a pair, in which case players have the option to make a "big bet."

5

Fifth & Sixth Street

Players receive their fifth and sixth cards face up, with a round of betting following each street. Starting on Fifth Street, all bets must be made at the higher limit (the "big bet"). The player with the highest showing hand always acts first.

7

Seventh Street & Showdown

The final seventh card is dealt face down to each remaining player. A final round of betting occurs. Then, players reveal their hands at the showdown. The best five-card high hand wins the pot.

Stud Poker Strategy for Beginners

Starting Hand Selection

  • Big Pairs: Hidden pairs (like Kings in the hole) or split pairs with a big kicker are strong hands to play aggressively.
  • Three of a Kind: Being "rolled up" (dealt three of a kind on 3rd street) is very rare (0.2%) but incredibly strong.
  • Live Draws: Three to a flush or straight are playable, but only if the cards you need aren't already showing on other boards.

Intermediate Tactics

  • 👁️ Track Dead Cards: The most crucial skill in Stud. If you are drawing to a spade flush and three spades are already folded, your odds of hitting drastically decrease.
  • Understand Position: Position is dynamic in Stud. The highest board acts first, meaning if your opponent catches a scary card, they take the betting lead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the bring-in bet?

The bring-in is a forced bet made on Third Street by the player holding the lowest face-up door card. This initiates the first round of betting.

What happens if the dealer runs out of cards?

Since there are only 52 cards in a deck, an 8-player game going to the river would require 56 cards. If there aren't enough cards left to deal every active player a final down card on Seventh Street, a single community card is dealt face up in the middle of the table for everyone to share.

How do you break a tie in Seven Card Stud?

If players have the exact same five-card hand value at showdown, the pot is split evenly. Suits are only used to break ties for determining the bring-in on Third Street, never for determining the winner at showdown.

What does "rolled up" mean?

"Rolled up" is a term used when a player's first three cards on Third Street are all of the same rank (Three of a Kind). It is an incredibly strong, disguised starting hand.

Seven Card Stud heavily rewards observation and discipline. Remember to watch the "dead cards" and value your strong starting pairs!
