How to Play Limit 2-7 Triple Draw
Also known as Deuce to Seven Lowball, this action-heavy game is a staple in high-stakes mixed games. You get three chances to discard and draw new cards to make the worst possible poker hand.
What is 2-7 Triple Draw?
Limit 2-7 Triple Draw is a "blind game" where players are dealt five private cards. There are no community cards, and no exposed cards like in Stud. The objective is to make the lowest possible five-card hand, where straights and flushes count against you, and Aces are always high!
1 Five Private Cards
You hold five cards in your hand. Information is hidden; you can only gauge opponents by how many cards they draw.
2 Three Drawing Rounds
You have three separate opportunities to discard any number of cards (from zero to five) and receive replacements.
3 Lowest Hand Wins
You are trying to make a hand of unpaired low cards without making a straight or a flush.
Deuce to Seven Hand Rankings
Unlike Omaha Hi-Lo or Stud 8, 2–7 Lowball uses a different low-hand ranking system. Aces are always treated as high cards, and straights and flushes count against you, making your hand worse. Because of this, the best possible hand is 7-5-4-3-2 with at least two different suits (no straight or flush).
The Nuts (Number One)
7-5-4-3-2 (Unsuited). Also called a "Wheel" in 2-7.
Very Strong Hand (Number Two)
7-6-4-3-2 (Unsuited). Notice it's not a straight!
A Terrible Hand
A Straight (6-5-4-3-2). Straights count against you, making this a very high (bad) hand.
Step-by-Step Gameplay
Limit 2-7 Triple Draw features four rounds of betting and three draws. The betting structure uses a Small Bet for the first two betting rounds, and a Big Bet for the final two.
Pre-Draw (First Betting Round)
The small and big blinds are posted. Players are dealt five cards face down. A round of betting occurs starting with the player left of the Big Blind. Bets are at the Small Bet limit.
First Draw & Second Betting Round
Starting with the Small Blind, active players announce how many cards they wish to discard (from 0 to 5) and the dealer gives them replacements. A player who discards 0 cards is "standing pat." Another round of betting occurs at the Small Bet limit.
Second Draw & Third Betting Round
Players may again discard and draw. Following the draw, the third betting round begins. The stakes double! All bets and raises are now at the Big Bet limit.
Third Draw & Final Betting Round
The final discard and draw takes place. A final round of betting occurs at the Big Bet limit. Any remaining players reveal their hands at showdown, and the lowest 5-card hand wins the pot.
2-7 Triple Draw Strategy & Tips
Core Principles
- ✓ The Power of Position: Position is everything. If you act last, you get to see exactly how many cards your opponents draw before you have to make a decision to draw or bet.
- ✓ Start with a 2: A premium starting hand requires a 2, because a 2 is necessary to make the absolute best hands (7-5-4-3-2, 7-6-4-3-2). If you don't have a 2, it is very hard to make a premium low hand.
- ✗ Avoid Drawing Three Cards: In general, you should fold if you need to draw three or more cards pre-draw, unless you are in the big blind checking your option. Stick to one-card and two-card draws with good potential.
Advanced Tactics
- 🛑 Standing Pat: If you are dealt a made hand like an 8-low or a 9-low, you can "stand pat" (draw 0 cards). This shows extreme strength. You can even "snow" (bluff by standing pat with a terrible hand) to force folds!
- ⚠️ Breaking a Hand: Sometimes you must break a made hand. If you have a J-low, but your opponent stands pat, you know your J is likely beaten. You should discard the Jack and try to draw a lower card to beat them.
- ♠️ Beware the Flush: Always check your suits! If you hold 2♠-3♠-4♠-5♠, you are in grave danger of hitting a spade and making a flush, which counts as a high hand and will lose you the pot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 7-5-4-3-2 the best hand and not 6-5-4-3-2? ▼
In 2-7 Lowball, straights count against you. Because Aces are high, the lowest straight is 6-5-4-3-2. Therefore, you must skip the 6 to avoid making a straight, making 7-5-4-3-2 the lowest possible non-straight hand.
What happens if the deck runs out of cards during a draw? ▼
If there are not enough cards in the deck to satisfy the active players' draws, the dealer will take the discarded cards from earlier rounds (excluding the cards discarded in the *current* round), shuffle them into a new deck, and continue dealing.
Can I draw all 5 new cards? ▼
Yes, the rules allow you to discard your entire 5-card hand and draw 5 new ones. However, strategically, this is almost always a terrible play and you should simply fold the hand instead of paying bets to draw 5.
